Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, or HBOT, is a system that uses pure medical grade oxygen under high- pressure to force increased levels of oxygen directly into the blood plasma without the assistance of hemoglobin. When the blood plasma becomes medical grade oxygen enriched, it helps the body function more efficiently especially in areas of the body that require a heavier oxygen demand such as injured tissue. Since HBOT can deliver more Oxygen to the entire body faster and more efficiently than hemoglobin can through normal respiration, scientific studies have shown that prescribing HBOT therapy can be very beneficial in the healing process of many medical conditions including:
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)
- Post Concussive Syndrome (PCS)
- Sports Injuries
- Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain
- Chronic fatigue
- Autoimmune disease
The difference between HBOT therapy and other Oxygen therapies is that HBOT, through pressure, forces medical grade oxygen directly into all areas of the body where other Oxygen therapies, known as normobaric oxygen therapy, requires the oxygen saturation to take place solely through the respiratory system, which is much less efficient especially when an injury has been sustained. At Aspen Medical Group, we often prescribe HBOT therapy for our patients to help drastically cut the healing time down when injuries have occurred. We also prescribe it for other Central Nervous System diseases and disorders to help slow the progress of the diseases thereby improving the patient’s quality of life.
